About the exhibition

Similarities, a word that sounds as if it contains a typo, a glitch, while suggestively referring to a likeness somehow marked. Such marking tends to be a trace of intense experience though not always necessarily leaving expressive, sharp features. Sometimes the traces of even the greatest expressiveness disappear in the blink of an eye transforming into their own negation or barely noticeable sediments forming deposited layers in our unconscious. This marking also does not clearly define the typology of these experiences locating them in many areas of experience, cognitive acts of participation or description of reality, in the sphere of bodily/psychic experiences, ways of expressing and constructing the world, combining, uniting and sometimes separating feeling with seeing and naming. In principle, any gaze can take the form of naming is a matter of intention of interpretation.

The concept of likeness is directly linked to the concept of likeness through its specific characteristics. Similarity itself, in turn, opens up the possibility of almost unlimited associations, creates a mysterious reality, an analogous, related presence, the very fact of similarity fascinates and at the same time worries about the possibility (circumstance) of the occurrence of opposites of sameness and difference. But similarity is one of the key questions about the language of art, its representation of being, symbolically shaped signs of phenomena, objects, feelings, ideas. In such a context, any "deviation" from the designator, which is in fact an attempt to tell about it precisely with the help of the differentiating properties of image, sound, textual relations, etc., which constitute a kind of cognitive operation on a specific phenomenon, abstract object, event, image, each time leaving a new trace, sometimes a scar. Similarity does not exclude individuality but significantly reduces its dimension. A scar, a scratch on similarity, a likeness, becomes a trace of transgression, a condition for knowledge, distance, recognition through art of what is the impetus for the creative processes undertaken.

The project in the area of Beata Cedrzynska's own artistic activity includes interdisciplinary activities that speak of transience, which man tries at all costs to push out of his consciousness: "I want to reach out to subjects that are important, getting to the heart of our human fears and most deeply hidden anxieties. To come face to face with our inevitable fate. To touch the usually shrouded in mystery problem of passing and death. Despite the fact that our memory depletes quickly, and inexorable time erases memories, distancing us from the emotions that once accompanied the important moments of our lives, I, in a sense, paradoxically try to stop the moments. I want, through my artwork, which is a manifestation of reflection directed towards my own life, thoughts about the death of loved ones and my own, to make the viewer stop and think."

As Ingarden wrote: "Plunged in time, to himself as a being independent of time eternally yearning, man feels threatened by the passing of time and the unknowable nothingness of tomorrow. Without realizing it, he wants to escape from himself, to forget himself. He tries not to see that he is constantly passing away, that with each passing moment he ends like burning embers (...). In order not to feel alone and a stranger in the world, he creates for himself the fiction of duty to something that is not actually there, that is unimportant, but that he has created for himself and to which, without admitting it, he gives the appearance of momentousness and existence (...). He thinks he is building a world around himself and himself in this world, and meanwhile he is suppressing his own fear of the emptiness that threatens him. And because of this, he is already becoming an emptiness all the more today."
