About the project

Students taking part in the TYPE TEXT ROOTS project designed works depicting their home region through typography. Each project is accompanied by a short description that explains the author's intention and the idea behind the work. In this way, you can not only admire the individual realizations, but also learn about the fascinating stories and experiences that inspired the artists. The disappearing languages of South America, specific Danish and German diacritical marks, the relationship between writing and embroidery in Poland, the poetics of Persian calligraphy, or the ideas of freedom expressed through typography are just some of the deeper content and meanings that can be found in these works. Although the project deals with the languages of particular regions and refers to the traditions of the authors' homelands, the works they designed often carry a universal message that can be understood at any latitude.

TYPE TEXT ROOTS exhibitions were held in April 2024 in Brisbane, Australia, during the annual conference of the International Typographic Association ATypI, in July 2024 at the Central Library of the Isfahan Municipality in Isfahan, Iran, the Art Book Museum in Lodz, and in April 2025 at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen (ATypI 2025).
