The Tale of the Heike – a series of lectures

We invite you to a unique series of lectures on *The Tale of the Heike*—one of the most important works of classical Japanese literature. It is an epic tale of power, decline, and transience, told over the centuries to the accompaniment of the biwa lute.

During our sessions, we’ll be transported to a world of imperial courts, samurai battles, dramatic choices, and moving love stories. We’ll explore both major historical events and the personal journeys of characters whose lives were marked by fragility and the inevitability of change.

Why is it worth it?

These aren’t just lectures on literature—they’re a journey through Japanese history, culture, and philosophy, which continue to inspire art, theater, and ways of thinking about the world to this day. If you’re interested in Japan, literature, history, or simply enjoy a good story—this series is for you.

Join us! Our first meeting is on April 20 atPJAIT Room A160 at 3:45 p.m.

The program will include reflections on the transience of life and the origins of the story at Jetavana Monastery, as well as a look at life at the imperial court and the love story of Emperor Takakura. The lectures will cover the Heike clan’s flight from the capital and the tragic fates of its members, the spectacular battles between the Genji and Heike clans, and an epilogue illustrating the inevitability of fate and the cycle of life. The sessions will also feature elements of Japanese culture, such as poetry recitation, traditional music, Noh theater, and court dances.
