Huge congratulations to Dr. Anna Barlik, a faculty member in the Department of New Media Arts.

On July 17, 2026, the Nguyen Wahed Gallery in New York City ’s East Village will open an exhibition titled “We Had Been Citizens of No Country,” featuring works by Anna Barlik ofPJAIT Irish artist John Gerrard.

This is Anna Barlik’s third exhibition in New York in recent months. Its opening will take place just two weeks after the conclusion of the artist’s solo exhibition at KODA House on Governors Island, where she presented the series “Flags of Non-Existent Countries.”

The exhibition explores the theme of the flag as a symbol of identity, borders, and belonging. John Gerrard uses generative digital simulations in which national flags take the form of virtual smoke. Anna Barlik, on the other hand, presents sculptural flags of nonexistent countries, made of steel, tulle, and fabric.

The works of both artists challenge the notion that national symbols are permanent and unambiguous. The exhibition raises the question of whether a sense of community stems from borders and history, or rather from shared values, culture, and experiences.
